Workshop participants working through a multi-year budget planning exercise

Structured services for multi-year budget planning

Budget planning across 3-to-7-year horizons requires more than spreadsheet skill. It demands a working understanding of forecast uncertainty, stakeholder alignment, and revision cycles that most organisations underestimate.

Kelupuu delivers hands-on workshops and guided programmes that build this capacity directly — through exercises drawn from real planning contexts, not hypothetical case studies. Participants work with actual budget structures and leave with techniques they can apply in the next planning cycle.

What the programmes cover

Three distinct service tracks, each addressing a different stage of budget planning competence.

Forecast fundamentals

A 2-day intensive covering the mechanics of multi-year revenue and expenditure modelling. Participants build working models from a baseline dataset across 6 planning scenarios.

  • Rolling forecast construction
  • Sensitivity and stress testing
  • Variance analysis frameworks
  • Assumption documentation standards
Enrolment capacity 14 / 18 seats

Stakeholder alignment track

A 3-session programme focused on the communication and negotiation layer of budget planning — the part that most technical training ignores entirely.

  • Budget narrative construction
  • Cross-department trade-off facilitation
  • Board-level presentation structure
  • Revision cycle management
Enrolment capacity 9 / 16 seats

Organisational planning programme

A 6-week cohort-based programme for finance leads and planning managers. Covers the full cycle from initial targets through to approved multi-year budget submission.

  • Capital vs. operational budget separation
  • Scenario planning with 4-year horizons
  • Collaborative review workflows
  • Post-approval monitoring setup
Enrolment capacity 6 / 12 seats

How the work is structured

Each programme follows a deliberate sequence — not a fixed curriculum, but a repeatable structure that adapts to the group's starting point.

01
Diagnostic baseline

Participants complete a 40-minute pre-workshop assessment covering their current planning tools, cycle length, and common failure points. This shapes session emphasis.

02
Structured exercises

Each session centres on a specific planning task — building a 5-year model, running a scenario comparison, or drafting a revision memo — rather than lecture-format delivery.

03
Peer review rounds

Groups of 3 to 4 participants review each other's outputs using a structured rubric. This surfaces gaps that self-assessment typically misses.

04
Application checkpoint

Between sessions, participants apply one specific technique to their own organisation's data and report back. Progress is tracked, not graded.

Programme completion
81%

Participants who complete all sessions and submit a final application checkpoint. Tracked across cohorts since 2015.

Session format
70%

Of total session time is hands-on exercise work. The remaining 30% covers concept framing and group debrief.

Group size
8–18

Cohorts are kept between 8 and 18 participants. Smaller than most training formats, intentionally — peer review only works at close range.

Delivery modes
3

Programmes run in virtual, in-person, and hybrid formats. All exercise materials and review tools are available across all three delivery modes.
